Session on Cancer biology and oncology

Cells that undergo uncontrolled division and proliferation are termed as cancer cells. Changes or mutations in the cell genome is the cause of cancer. Cancer biology deals with these changes and the molecular networks that control cell proliferation, differentiation and cell death. The study of various types of cancer is termed as Oncology. Market Analysis

EUROPE: Cancer accounts for 20% of deaths in the European Region. Europe has around one quarter of the global total of cancer cases with some 3.7 million new patients per year. With more than 3.7 million new cases, cancer represents the second most important cause of death and morbidity in Europe.

USA: In 2017, 15,270 children and adolescents ages were diagnosed with cancer and 1,790 died of the disease.

Estimated national expenditures for cancer care in the United States in 2017 were $147.3 billion.

The most recent Cancer Statistics Review, released in April 2018, shows that cancer death rates in USA is decreased by:

o 1.8% per year among men from 2006 to 2015

o 1.4% per year among women from 2006 to 2015

o 1.4% per year among children ages 0–19 from 2011 to 2015

ASIA: Asia has about half the cancer incidence rate of North America (152.2 cases/100,000 person-years versus 315.6 cases/100,000 person-years). However, the ratio of cancer deaths to the number of new cancer cases in 2012 was much higher in Asia (0.66) than in North America (0.33). India alone accounts for 27% of global cervical cancer deaths, which may be due to the unavailability of screening.

Smoking and Tobacco: Smoking, a main cause of lung cancer, contributes to 80 percent and 90 percent of lung cancer deaths in women and men, respectively. Men who smoke are 23 times more likely to develop lung cancer. Women are 13 times more likely, compared to never smokers. In Europe, smoking causes an estimated 82% of lung cancers.

Diet and Physical Activity: Many studies have looked at the possibility that specific dietary components or nutrients are associated with increases or decreases in cancer risk. Studies of cancer cells in the laboratory and of animal models have sometimes provided evidence that isolated compounds may be carcinogenic (or have anticancer activity). Getting to and staying at a healthy weight is important to reduce the risk of cancer. To reduce cancer risk, most people need to keep their BMIs below 25. Besides quitting smoking, some of the most important things you can do to help reduce your cancer risk are:

• Get to and stay at a healthy weight throughout life.

• Be physically active on a regular basis.

• Make healthy food choices with a focus on plant-based foods.

Sun and Other Types of Radiation: Radiation can cause cancer in most parts of the body and at any age, although radiation-induced solid tumours usually take 10–15 years, and can take up to 40 years, to become clinically manifest, and radiation-induced leukaemia typically require 2–10 years to appear.

Viruses and Other Infections: In the developing world, 15% of cancers are due to infections such as Helicobacter pylori, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, human papillomavirus infection, Epstein–Barr virus and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
